I wrote this poem in 2001 in memory of my mom and grandma.
Momma, you can’t make me over
This is what I am,
(And not too bad, when I think about it.)
I’m living my life,
(Though my essence is still you)
Now I’m a mother too.
I remember all the things you taught me –
How to live on this earth.
Every lesson that I’ve learned from you
I’m passing on to this new birth.
Every one of your lessons had worth.
If I don’t remember all
I’ll make them up as I go along
(my essence is you, so how can I possibly go wrong).
Momma, I won’t let you down.
I promise to remain,
And pass honor on to your name,
And my children will do the same
In the name of the love you have given me.
(After all, my essence is you, and I can love strongly too!).
So many things have happened
Since I was a little girl.
(Some things I’ve done could make you hair turn straight.)
But every door I’ve had to walk through
I’ve held my head up like you taught me to.
Start and end every day new.
I can leave the worst behind
For when we meet again at Heaven’s Gate.
No need to change me, you made me,
Look at all the things I’ve done.
Your influence has always been there
I submit to your love, you’ve won.
No evil on this earth can hurt me,
(Though I’ve sometimes managed to hurt myself)
But your love and teaching guide me, provide for me
And I can leave some love behind for someone else.
My only sadness is that I can only talk to you in my dreams.
Forgive me for waiting so long
And say hi to grandma too,
And thank her for me
For being so strong.
(my essence is you, and its power goes on!)

To dress up like these cute lil furry rockers – we just had a blast that day!
